Day 25: Trans-Siberian Railway from Ulan Ude to Irkutsk in Eastern Siberia

Tuesday, October 11, 2016

The pedestrian overpass is a short cut to the train station in Ulan Ude.

Cargo trains full of different grades of coal.

An old steam engine on display.

Check out the guy in the colorful shorts. Even though it's about 2 degrees C outside, it's 23 degrees inside the train, so many guys change into shorts for the ride.

Lots of people sleep in on the long train rides. This was an overnighter.

I love the window seats.

Lake Baikal, the deepest fresh water lake in the world.

Russian friend Erdem who is proud of his Buryat culture, and Servieta and her boyfriend Daniel. Servieta laughed to learn that her name means "napkin" in Spanish and German.

Freight train, freight train, coming round the bend.

Nice to be  in the warm train looking outside at the snow.

The woman on the left was an English teacher for many years. The other woman worked on the trains for over 30 years before retiring. She said her pension is $241 a month which is enough to live on if she doesn't waste her money.

With Erdem and Servieta, who were kind enough to share their food with me since I hadn't packed any. Erdem, a proud Buryat (who have their roots in Mongolia), said Lake Baikal belongs to the Buryats.
